Detour: Adventure Planner
Plan a trip on a map. Take a detour.
What it does
Detour plans your trip day by day on a map. Tell it where you're going and when you land, and it builds each day: breakfast, sights, lunch, an adventure and dinner near where you stay. Every stop is a real place with its address, opening hours and website where available, a Look Around preview, and directions. It's free, has no ads, and has no account.
Using it
- Setup: destination, arrival and departure airports and times, where you're staying (optional), your housing budget and trip style.
- Home base: choose where you'll sleep from a list of neighborhoods or hotels and B&Bs, each ranked by how many of the city's top sights are within a 20-minute walk, or tap Let Detour decide. Detour can't see live prices or rooms, so it links to Airbnb and Booking.com to check them.
- How far will you roam? On the Plan page (and before you plan a Surprise result) choose 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 miles. With a bigger area each day gets its own base town, so expect some driving.
- Surprise: can't decide where to go? Roll the world. A map lights up countries one at a time until one lands, zooms in, then rolls that country's best-known destinations until one lands. Tap Plan this trip to start planning it. You can limit the draw to one region, favor popular destinations, leave out countries you've already visited (Places I've been), and turn the sound on or off.
- Itinerary: a map and your days. Tap a stop to see it, or to change it: pick a category, type anything ("seafood", "free entry"), lock it, pick a different place, reorder, or move it to another day.
- Scrapbook: on the Itinerary page, switch from Days to Scrapbook and flip through your trip like a photo album: a cover, a page for each day, and a page for each stop with one or two pictures, its time and a note. Photos come from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (credited under each picture). Places with no photo of their own get a "mood photo" of that kind of place, clearly marked, plus a map clipping. Tap the top photo for another.
- Explore: browse sights, food, coffee, outdoor spots, nightlife and shops within 1 to 15 miles of your stay. Each place shows its distance, a photo, and a popularity label where Wikipedia has an article for it. Flip Lock into my adventure to add it to the day where it fits best.
- Take a detour: adds a surprise stop near that day's route.
- Quick edits (the chat button): type a change in plain words, such as "add a seafood dinner on day 2", "add a museum to day 3", "I land at 7:30am", "check-in is at noon" or "my flight leaves at 4pm".
- Share & export (More tab): add your plan to your Calendar with the right times, or share it as text, a PDF or a calendar file, or as a KML file for Google My Maps.
- Undo (top left of Itinerary) brings back the plan before your last change. My trips keeps every trip you plan.
Sending your trip to Google My Maps
- Open the Export tab and tap Save KML to Files / Google Drive (or Copy KML as text if your email app won't attach the file).
- On a computer, open mymaps.google.com, choose Create a new map, then Import, and pick the file. Each day becomes its own layer.
- On a phone, My Maps only offers Import in your browser's desktop mode.
Common questions
- Why are some stops missing hours or a website? That information comes from Wikivoyage and Apple Maps, and not every place has it. Check before you go.
- It can't find places in a very remote area. Results come from Apple Maps and Wikivoyage, which are thinner away from towns. Try a nearby town as the destination.
- Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance, not live traffic.
- Are there star ratings? No. Apple Maps doesn't provide them to apps, so Detour shows distance, photos and Wikipedia-based popularity instead, only where they exist.
